Horrible teachers (some malicious, others lazy minded) have muddied the waters of meditation; concocting or passing on expectations of mind blanking or concentration that are neurologic impossibilities whose mere attempting does far more harm than good.
We evolved to perceive, emote, intend, think, recall, and imagine. Thanks to our sympathetic nervous system we’re wired to NOTICE these things during each inhalation (viscerally, vulnerably, passively, and spontaneously).
Doing so is NOT a failure BUT an opportunity to use our parasympathetic nervous system (during each exhalation) to physically relax and mentally release our resistance that we might go with the flow and meditate like a Jedi.
