The Folly of Striving to Still our Minds - 3sep21

Numerous meditation teachers

exhort their students

to still their minds.

One need only watch Anakin’s

cringe-worthy attempts to woo Padme Amidala

(on Coruscant and then on Naboo)

to know that love must never be forced.

For when either stillness or love are forced,

that which is produced

is only an analog of the real thing:

entirely unsatisfying in nature;

whose contrivance digs one ever deeper

into the ditch of the duality of dread and desire.

The Buddha’s techniques to transcend duality

find peace both in mind’s stillness

as well as its movement.

Let us conclude

with a simple

call to action

In the Tibetan tradition Lamas are supported

not by monasteries but by students

as such the production of these livestreams,

blogs, and class materials is supported

by the generosity of viewers, and listeners, and readers

just like you.
